At ESSENCE’s Black Women in Business Luncheon, Honorees Reflect on Legacy, Leadership and What Comes Next
Fashion, beauty, and business came together at ESSENCE’s 2026 Black Women in Business Luncheon, held at Villa Lewaro, the historic estate of entrepreneur Madam C.J. Walker. The October 22 gathering honored four influential women, including fashion designer Anifa Mvuemba, founder of Hanifa, alongside television host Tamron Hall, cultural strategist Ayiko Broyard, and beauty executive Sarah Curtis Henry.

For Mvuemba, who received the Entrepreneur of the Year Award, the occasion recognized the work behind building an independent fashion label and redefining how Black women are represented in the industry. Known for Hanifa’s contemporary designs and innovative approach to fashion presentation, the designer has built a brand rooted in her creative vision. Her reflections on entrepreneurship also touched on the importance of rest, personal growth, and creating a business that can evolve alongside its founder.
Throughout the luncheon, the honorees spoke about defining success on their own terms, recognizing the people who supported their journeys, and creating opportunities for the next generation. Set against the legacy of Madam C.J. Walker, the gathering offered a timely reminder that influence extends beyond individual achievements.
Lasting success also means making room for more Black women to lead, create, and shape the industries they help move forward.
