Alicia Keys and Swizz Beatz Launch Giants Exhibition at VMFA Celebrating Black Artists This Fall

This fall, the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts (VMFA) will open its doors to a groundbreaking exhibition that merges love, legacy, and the visionary power of Black artistry. Curated from the personal collection of Grammy-winning power couple Alicia Keys and Swizz Beatz, Giants: Art from the Dean Collection of Swizz Beatz and Alicia Keys is set to showcase some of the most influential names in contemporary Black art, while also amplifying emerging voices shaping the future of visual culture.

The collection, known as the Dean Collection, has long been a passion project for Keys and Beatz, who have spent years intentionally investing in Black and Brown artists often overlooked by traditional institutions. Together, they have built one of the most respected private collections in the world, with works ranging from photography and painting to large-scale installations. Giants captures the breadth of their vision, highlighting artists who have redefined the boundaries of creativity while reclaiming space for Black narratives in the fine art world.

“The title Giants is a tribute both to the monumental works in the collection and to the towering influence of the artists themselves,” says VMFA. Visitors can expect to encounter works by legendary names such as Gordon Parks, Kehinde Wiley, and Lorna Simpson, alongside newer contemporary forces who reflect the vitality and diversity of Black experience. Each piece speaks to resilience, innovation, and the enduring legacy of artistry born out of struggle, triumph, and imagination.

For Keys and Beatz, the collection is deeply personal. Beyond collecting, they have made it their mission to shift the art world’s balance of power by celebrating and supporting artists during their lifetime, not just posthumously. “We want to give artists their flowers while they’re here,” Swizz has said in past interviews, emphasizing that representation and equity in art must start with visibility and access. This ethos has positioned the Dean Collection not only as a trove of masterpieces but also as a cultural movement.

The Giants exhibition at VMFA is more than a display; it is a dialogue between art and community. Set to open in the fall, the show will be accompanied by programming that uplifts local voices, fosters education, and connects Black audiences to the lineage of creativity that runs through their own communities. For Alicia Keys, whose music has always leaned into themes of empowerment, and Swizz Beatz, who has consistently championed artistry across mediums, this exhibition is an extension of their shared commitment to culture as resistance, healing, and celebration.

The timing of Giants feels especially poignant as museums around the country grapple with how to diversify collections and respond to the calls for equity within cultural spaces. By centering Black artists and placing their work in one of the nation’s most respected institutions, Keys and Beatz are contributing to a wider transformation within the art world—one that not only acknowledges past exclusions but actively builds new futures.

For Richmond and beyond, Giants represents a major cultural moment. Visitors will not only witness the vastness of Black creativity but will also feel the love story between two collectors who see art as both legacy and liberation. The exhibition reminds us that to honor Black art is to honor Black life in all its depth, beauty, and brilliance.
